The ninth THE LEAP YEAR/AÑO BISIESTO

Hello everybody this is Profesor Jake and welcomeback to a new activity

In this case we are going to learn some general culture, in English and in Spanish, in this case there are some differences.

I told you this is a leap-year, and I'd like to tell you why.

Leap is like a jump but refering to a FROG

but not only referring to the batrachians, they are also related to the years.

You already know that this is because the definition of a year refers to one orbit of the earth around the sun.

We (human beings) have divided that return into 12 months or 365 days

But what it really takes for the Earth to rotate around its star (the sun) is 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds . Let's say 6 hours more and every 4 years (6X4=24) we add one more day.

It's actually 365 days and six hours to round up.

For historical reasons, for example the Romans started the year in March, then Pope Gregory XIII established our current Gregorian calendar... this extra day is added every 4 years (even and multiple of 4) on a day like today. Which also coincides with the Olympic year (except for the unfortunate pandemic whose date I don't want to remember)

En español no es "leap" sino BISIESTO: Primero, el día que se añadió fue el 24 de febrero. Por eso el año se llama bisiesto, porque añade el bix sextus dies ante calendas martii ('repetición del sexto día antes del primero de marzo'), del latín.

ya sabéis que esto se debe a que la definición de año se refiere a una órbita de la tierra alrededor del sol

nosotros (los seres humanos) hemos dividido esa vuelta en 12 meses y en 365 días.

pero lo que realmente le cuesta a la tierra girar alrededor de su estrella (el sol) son 365 días , 5 horas, 48 minutos y 46 segundos. Vamos que 6 horas de más y cada 4 años (6X4=24) añadimos un día más.

Por motivos históricos, por ejemplo los romanos empezaban el año en marzo, después el papa Gregorio XIII instauró nuestro actual calendario gregoriano... este día de más se añade cada 4 años (par y múltiplo de 4) un día como hoy. Que también coincide con año olímpico (excepto el desgraciado de la pandemia de cuya fecha no quiero acordarme)

En inglés el año bisiesto se llama leap year y el 29 de febrero leap day. Leap quiere decir saltar, y supongo que el concepto es de un cuerpo que aterriza cada cuatro años, estando en el aire cuando no. La explicación que aparece en un diccionario inglés es que los días festivos que siguen el 29 de febrero tardan en llegar —porque se ha realizado un brinco delantero— un día más.

¿Te acuerdas de la famosa frase de Armstrong en la luna? “That´s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind”

Leap es lo que hacen las ranas. Un salto. El año bisiesto en inglés es un leap year porque el calendario gregoriano se pasa por alto un día. Míralo así. En 2012 el día de navidad cayó en martes. En 2013, en miércoles. El 25 de diciembre de 2014 fue jueves. ¿Navidad 2015? Viernes. Al 2016 le toca sábado, pero este año, por ser bisiesto, navidad pega un brinco y se planta en domingo. Leap year. El año del salto.

the seventh the peace day

Hello everybody this is Profesor Jake and welcome back to a new activity

We're in February a very special month, as a curiosity it's the shortest month, but with the most activities of the course and with a huge variety of events.

Last week we all celebrated the Peace Day (you can watch a video)

This year is a leap year so we have 29th of February 

Today we have an interesting exercise, and no so easy for those who ask for more level.

Don't panic anyone, there's a VIDEO which will help everybody.

It's a classical video between Profesor Jake, and his former helper Mate.

The little pawn on e-6 can capture the black one (X d-7) but instead of that it continues forward  (e-7) with the idea of a promotion on its tiny but clever head.

What happens next?... with the help of the Knight is just a kind of magic, so think about it and send me your solutions.

El pequeño peón en e-6 puede capturar al negro (X d-7) pero en lugar de eso continúa adelante con la idea de una promoción en su pequeña pero inteligente cabeza.

¿Qué pasa después?... con la ayuda del Caballo es algo mágico, así que piénsalo y avíame tus soluciones.

Before the second challenge let's correct the exercises from the last week.

Last week our friends Daniel and Millán (from CEIP Doctor Castroviejo) faced a couple of challenges giving checkmate in two moves:

First of all we try to move our Bishop in order to check the King

Second black can't move the king so he/she have to move the Rook capturing the pawn

Third the Bishop checks mate on f-4 B f-4#

Primero intentamos mover nuestro alfil para controlar al rey.

Segundo las negras no pueden mover al rey, por lo que tiene que mover la torre para capturar el peón.

Tercero el alfil da jaque mate en f-4 B f-4#

We Black King is almost lost but we have to avoid they contine forward with its pawn

So we check with our Knight on e-4 (N e-4 +)

Next the King has only one square not in check (K d-3)

And finally N f-4 # is checkmate.

El Rey Negro está casi perdido pero tenemos que evitar que sigan adelante con su peón.

Así que pasamos con nuestro Caballo en e-4 (C e-4+)

A continuación, el Rey tiene sólo una casilla que no está en jaque (R d-3)

Y finalmente C f-4# es jaque mate.
